Scholarship and academics are extremely important to us. We believe academics within a fraternity must be a high priority seeing as fraternities are student organizations. The problem we, as well as other fraternities face, is that new members do not take their school work seriously and eventually lose their membership status. However, Phi Sig maintains strict policies to make sure new and old members keep their grades high and remain with the brotherhood.
For new members, we make sure to track their exam grades for the first semester that they're with Phi Sig. Once we realize a new member is receiving poor grades, we find ways to assist them in any way we can. We encourage them to go to tutoring services, study with brothers and ask brother's with similar majors for help. In addition, we have mandatory study hours for all new members, which we make sure to work around their schedules.
There are also many policies and standards set for brothers. All brothers need to attend five study hours per week. Everyone is expected to keep track of the amount of hours studied by posting their hours in the central log. Failure to meet study hour requirements for a specific week bans that member from that week's social event. So as long as you get your work done, it's time to have fun!
Study hours can be increased or decreased depending on the grade results of members. At the end of each semester, we check everyone's grade reports and view how each member did. If members receive a GPA between 3.0 and 3.5, their study hours remain at five hours a week for the following semester. Anyone who gets a 3.5 or above, earns the right to not have to attend study hours. These members work hard and are rewarded for their efforts. However, we still encourage them to join other members at study hours and help those struggling academically. Any members who receive a GPA in between a 2.5 and a 3.0 have to attend 7 study hours a week the following semester. If a member gets below a 2.5, that individual receives social probation, which goes into effect at the beginning of the next semester. This is the last thing we want our members to go through, which is why we strive to make sure our members maintain high GPA's and achieve academic excellence.
